An AI persona is a fake online identity built using AI-generated profile photos, AI-written biographical details, and in some cases an AI chatbot to hold conversations. These fake personas operate on dating apps, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and increasingly on professional platforms where they target people with money, credentials, or access.
The most common patterns include romance scam personas that build emotional connections before introducing investment or financial requests, fake LinkedIn recruiters that collect personal information or redirect victims to phishing sites, investment mentors who promote crypto or trading platforms, and fake influencers who promote products or solicit payments.
Signs of an AI persona include profile photos with subtle artifacts around hair edges, ears, or backgrounds, limited posting history or all posts within a narrow time window, no real-world connections or tagged appearances in others' photos, overly polished writing with no regional colloquialisms, and conversations that steer quickly toward financial topics.
To verify a profile, run the profile photo through a reverse image search. Check when the account was created and how many followers or connections it has acquired relative to its age. Look for mutual connections who are real, verifiable people. Ask a specific question about a local place or recent event that an AI persona would not know from its training data.
If you find a fake account, do not engage further, report the profile using the platform's reporting tools, and if you have shared financial information or sent money, contact your bank or card issuer immediately.
